Warrior Women
2016
My images begin with anonymous 19th-century tintypes, which I appropriate and alter. The names that I give each woman are from this era as well. By naming I give each a personal identity.
Several events occurred during the 19th century. Tintypes became the first means of recording one’s image that was affordable for the masses. Darwin’s work in biological determination helped fuel the belief that men were the superior sex. It was believed that women were best suited as wives and mothers and were confined to the home.
On the other hand, my women are strong and ready to stand up and fight. Unlike men, we do not fight with weapons. We are peaceful, we organize, we listen, we watch and we will come together as one solid force.
