I was inspired to create this series after reading "How Tuberculosis Symptoms Became Ideals of Beauty in the Late 18th and Early 19th century" by Allison Meier for Hyperallergic. Meier's article referenced "Consumptive Chic: A History of Beauty, Fashion, and Disease" a book by Carolyn A. Day that investigates how many of the physical symptoms of tuberculosis became what was considered then to be modern-day chic. Pale skin, rosy cheeks, red lips, thin frail bodies, and stooped posture.
