Herb Women
2021
This series is inspired by Jeanne Baret who in 1769 disguised herself as a man and became the first woman to circumnavigate the globe by boat. Beret was known as an herb woman. Herb women were knowledgable in the medicinal uses of herbs and were the ones who supplied the herbs to “town-dwelling men-who were largely ignorant of how any given species might look in the wild and who considered plant collecting beneath them” (The Discovery of Jeanne Baret by Glynis Ridley)
All of the herbs in these images were used to end or prevent unwanted pregnancies. Unfortunately, these herbs could be very dangerous if used improperly. As states try to ban legal abortions, women may be forced to use unsafe methods once again.
